Dear Members of the N.A.S.F.,
I work with Captain Carl Fismer on our
project of excavating the Eendracht. The story will be breaking in the local
and perhaps national press in about two weeks, and I wanted to give you some
advance notice. National Geographic has also expressed interest in the story,
although their time line for publishing is much slower.
The discovery of the Eendracht would be
important if for no other reason than that it is the only Dutch vessel manned
by a Dutch crew ever found in the Americas, but it is especially important
for having discovered Cape Horn [Hoorne] in 1616, named after the town of the
ship's construction, and because it set sail for the Americas the same year
as did Piet Hind's notorious fleet. The
Eendracht's capture of the Almirante of Honduras of 1624 is a
fascinating story by itself, as are the tales of the Eendracht
t's sinking, the survival of its crew, and their return to the
Netherlands. We already have photos of
some marvelous artifacts we have recovered from the wreck. Perhaps we could
arrange to talk with your group sometime.
We could very much use assistance in researching
the archives in the Netherlands to uncover the manifest of the Eendracht,
her construction plans, and the Captain's reports to the ship's owners.
We could also use help in funding the excavation
and establishing a museum and travelling display of the finds.
Would you please send me your street address,
phone number, and fax # that we may be able to communicate more fully.
Thnak you very much.
